SaferSeniors is a short course comprising five learning modules. Each module focuses on a different aspect of abuse and mistreatment of older people. It is recommended that you complete the modules in order, however you can freely navigate between them if you wish.

Module 1 – Understanding abuse & mistreatment of older people
Understand what abuse and mistreatment of older people is, how it happens, and who it affects. Explore the social, cultural, and individual factors that contribute to abuse and learn to identify those most at risk.

Module 2 – Recognising abuse and mistreatment of older people
Learn how to identify red flags and early indicators of abuse or neglect. Explore behavioural, physical, and environmental clues that suggest risk, and apply culturally informed approaches to recognition.

Module 3 – Prevention and Early Intervention
Discover proactive strategies that reduce risk and promote respectful relationships. Learn how legal and community mechanisms – such as enduring powers of attorney, guardianship, and advance care directives – can safeguard older people’s rights.

Module 4 – Responding to abuse and mistreatment
Build confidence in responding ethically and effectively when abuse is suspected or disclosed. This module focuses on trauma-informed care, professional boundaries, and referral pathways.

Module 5 – Recovery from abuse and mistreatment
Explore what recovery looks like for older people after abuse. Learn how holistic, culturally safe, and empowering supports promote healing and how workers can maintain their own wellbeing while assisting others.
